How Can We Help?
Donor Services Officer
Two years ago, a group of concerned civic leaders and donors approached BCF with a vision: a designated fund to support life-sustaining and life-affirming programs for Baltimore’s diverse LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning) community. They were particularly concerned about the health, happiness and wellbeing of vulnerable young people.
Their vision became the LGBTQ Fund at BCF and in 2019, the group made their first grants totaling nearly $100,000 to support groups, performances, art exhibitions, mental health and wellness programs and equity and inclusion initiatives for LGBTQ youth. First round grantees included Black Men’s Xchange, FreeState Justice, Iron Crow Theatre, Single Carrot Theatre and Urban Teachers, as well as Bard High School and Friends School.
As K. Alice Young, Partner at Nusinov Smith and LGBTQ Fund Advisory Committee member said in our November 20-Minute Update broadcast, “’’Life-affirming’ means having role models and seeing people from our community that have met success through hard work and being accepted, so youth are internalizing that to say “I could have that too. This is someone like me who is prominent in the community and has a voice.” Those are the types of changes we want youth to experience, so that as the next generation of leaders, they go into the world with that inner light and strength.”
